What are the admission eligibility requirements?

  • Child of an incoming family moving to Sweden, whose parent has been given an international or local assignment with a company or organization in the Gothenburg region due to the parent’s specific expertise.
    The intention is for limited contracts. The workplace must provide a certificate of employment.

    If places are available in a particular grade level, then applicants meeting the following criteria will be considered:
  • Families who have a confirmed move abroad on a work contract with a fixed date of departure within 12-18 months and need their children prepared for entering a recognised International School abroad;
  • Students who have attended a recognised International Programme abroad for a major part of their Education and need to complete their International Programme (IB Diploma) in Gothenburg (primarily returning Swedish families).  

What is the best way to demonstrate that I meet the Criteria and gain admission to ISGR?
Successful applications include an official letter from the Gothenburg Region-based company transferring the employee, signed and issued in advance of (generally 10 weeks before) the work placement commencing. The letter confirms that the employee is moving from abroad to the Gothenburg Region, together with his or her family, and supports the need for a place at ISGR during the work assignment period. Start and end dates should be provided based on the initial employment period or the timeframe of a project on which the employee will work. The student should be ready to start in reasonable alignment with the start date of the work assignment (generally not more than one month before or after).

What should I do if my application is Declined?
All fully completed applications are carefully considered. Applications are Declined when they are incomplete, incorrect or not eligible under our criteria open at the time.  It may be that we were unable to classify you as ‘incoming’ to Sweden for an international work assignment or confirm that the intention was for a ‘limited’ period of time. Unsuccessful applicants who are currently in Sweden or continue with their move, should contact their local municipality school for a place, as school is compulsory in Sweden for children from the age of six.

How is grade level placement determined
Our policy is to place students in their age-appropriate grade level. We also take into consideration a student’s previous school experience. This is done on a case by case basis looking at formal years of schooling rather than ability in subject areas. We do not have an entrance test but assess students in their initial weeks on a range of measures to ensure they are fitting in to the program.

  • August 31st determines the student’s grade level.
  • Students entering PYPK must be five years old by the 31st of August of the year of entry, for PYP1 they must be six years old by 31st August of the year of entry and so on.
  • Students entering PYP1 must have previous formal schooling
Students entering MYP10 are required to have previous MYP school experience, which is essential in completing the Personal Project and completing the demands of the MYP10 program. The Pre-IB option is for those who do not meet this requirement and is offered through IHGR.

In my home country students begin school a year earlier than at ISGR, how do you accommodate this?

At ISGR we have students who come from all over the world with a wide range of school experiences.  We aim to differentiate the academic level of the work within the class to meet the needs of the individual. In some cases, and after our assessment and observation of a student we may discuss (with the parents) the possibility of moving the student into another grade level.

How many students are in each class?

In the early grades we endeavor to keep class sizes to around 24 students with one teacher and one classroom assistant where necessary. For later years, numbers can increase to approximately 26. At times when we have high demand for places, class sizes may increase in order to accommodate the needs of moving families. In these cases, the increase will be met with additional resources, including teaching assistants where appropriate.

My children have very limited English how will they cope?

We have an English as an Additional Language program at ISGR where specialist teachers take small groups of students for tuition in English.  This is usually when the rest of the class are doing their Language Arts.  When the students are proficient in English then they will remain with their class the whole time. Students receiving English Language support will be exempt from other language classes.

Does ISGR have a gifted or gifted and talented program?

We do not have a special program for gifted and talented students.  Our teachers focus on differentiation in the classroom to meet the needs of the students within the class.

How does ISGR cater for Special Needs students?
ISGR has a dedicated Student Support Team, comprising of a School Nurse, Counsellor, Psychologist, School Doctor, Principal, and Learning Support Teacher. The team (except Psychologist and Doctor) meet weekly to evaluate the needs of individual students highlighted by the Admissions Office or Teachers. Students can be seen by different specialists depending on their needs. The Counsellor and School Nurse look after health, social and emotional needs of students, and the Learning Support Teacher supports the learning needs of students. Does ISGR undertake any standardized testing?

In February each year, our international section students undertake the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) standardised test, which is designed specifically for students in Grades 3–10 in international schools. The National section follows the Swedish national test programme. The ISA is based on the construct and frameworks of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's Programme for International Student Assessment (OECD PISA). In recent rounds of testing, ISGR has shown to have overall parity with other comparable international schools, and to be above in some areas.

How easily do children make the transition to ISGR?

The school aims to make the transition as smooth as possible for students.  Each new student is assigned a buddy to guide them around the school and help explain school routines. Every student at ISGR knows what it is like to be a new student and so is very helpful to newcomers. Examination of the previous school records ensures that the academic level of the work is appropriate and teachers welcome parents who have questions or concerns to arrange an appointment to discuss them as early as possible.  The school counselor is also available to support students and parents.

How is the school year organised at ISGR?
In Sweden, the academic year begins in August and concludes in June.  The academic year is divided into two terms. The Autumn Term runs from August to December and the Spring Term is from January to June.  Please see the School Calendar for specific start dates and holidays.

When can a place be obtained?
International work assignments can occur at any time depending on the particular needs of organisations.  ISGR tries to meet the needs of all students when they arrive, however applications should be submitted well in advance of their arrival in Sweden, and places should not be expected less than 10 weeks after submission of a fully completed application meeting our criteria.

Can students enroll mid-term?
The majority of new students arrive at the beginning of our terms in either August or January.  We do however accept students arriving during the term, if planned well in advance.  The time it takes to enroll a student will depend on class sizes and available resources.  It may sometimes be necessary to defer the offer of a place until the student can be appropriately accommodated, but you will be advised of this at the earliest opportunity. It is not possible to start students at the end of term in December nor June.

What are the conditions for commencing in a place at ISGR?
Once a place is offered and accepted, the student must commence in reasonable alignment with the start date of the work assignment (generally not more than one month before or after).  If the place is not taken up in this timeframe it will expire and be offered to another student.  The School Fee applies upon acceptance of a place regardless of whether it is taken up.

What is the minimum duration for a placement at ISGR? 
International work assignments can be short notice and short term.  ISGR therefore accepts students for periods as short as three months duration.  It is not feasible for the school nor academically productive for the student, to accept students for shorter periods of time. Parents (or the company commissioning the short-term placement) will need to pay the full term School Fee to cover the necessary resources for the placement and privation of the Government Subsidy.

What is the policy for Leave of Absence?

If you wish to take your child out of school during term then you will need to apply for Leave of Absence.  Students are allowed up to 10 days absence in any one school year; days of absence are cumulative.  If a student is absent without approval for longer than 10 days consecutively, then they will be automatically withdrawn from the school.  Parents will need to reapply and demonstrate that they still meet the Admissions Criteria if they wish to return to ISGR.  School in Sweden is compulsory so parents must apply for any leave in accordance with school regulations.

How many students currently attend ISGR?
As of the 2018/2019 academic year we have oapproximately 720 students in our PYP and MYP programs.

What is the difference between the National Section and the International Section?

The students attending the National Section are all permanent residents in Sweden and receive the Swedish National Curriculum.  The International Students follow the International Baccalaureate Program.  The student body in the National Section has chosen ISGR because the English Language has a higher profile here than in most other Swedish schools.

Why does the school have two programs?

When ISGR began in 1997 there were a relatively small number of students in the International Section.  Having a National Section gives the school financial stability as its student numbers do not fluctuate and also increases the school’s cultural diversity.

Why isn’t ISGR a private school like some other International Schools?

When the school was set up by GR (Gothenburg Region), our owners, they decided that it would be formed as a Swedish school offering an international program.  Skolverket gave permission for ISGR to charge a ‘reasonable’ School Fee to their international students to meet the higher costs of education and resources incurred for offering an International Education.  Any change in the level of fee must be agreed by our Board.

Where do the expatriate families live?
Our families live in all areas of the Gothenburg Region.  Most areas within the Gothenburg Region have good public transport systems to the two ISGR campuses.  It is a requirement that our students are registered in a Gothenburg Region municipality with the Tax Office.

Do the students travel on school buses?

There are no school buses. However, once students are properly registered at the Tax Office and have provided the School with their Swedish personal number, they are eligible to receive a tram card, which allows them to travel on any bus or tram in the Gothenburg Region on weekdays between 6.30am and 6.30pm.  It is also possible to ‘top-up’ this card to allow the students to travel later into the evening and at weekends. It is the municipality in which you live that provides the bus cards, not the schools. Each municipality orders cards for students living in their municipality. Contact your municipality directly for further information.

How can parents be involved at ISGR?

ISGR recognizes that the education of their students is a partnership between, the school, the parents and the students and therefore actively encourages parental involvement at the school.  There is an extremely active PTA and a host of volunteers involved in social and fund-raising, helping in the library, with crafts, EAL and listening to students read.
